About Klein Tafelberg 4x4 Trail
About two hours north of Cape Town and 15 kilometres outside Redlinghuys is the quiet retreat of the Klein Tafelberg 4x4 Trail. Its serene setting belies the challenge and fun about to be had by drivers and their passengers as they head out into the untouched terrain of the Western Cape in the very midst of the West Coast Sandveld.
The Klein Tafelberg 4x4 Trail is 18 kilometres long and is a circular route that starts on the sand, complete with twists and turns, as well as some fun dune driving. Drivers can opt to stop at the picnic spot after the sandy stretch (which gets softer and more challenging as the day heats up), or head straight onto the Adoons Mountain Trail, which is a rocky section with more bang. This part of the route requires 4x4 vehicles that have a low range and high ground clearance. Diff-lock is advantageous. This scenic stretch boasts stunning views, coupled with steep rocky descents and ledges.
The terrain of the trail, in a general sense, is made up of sand, solid rock faces and rock steps or ledges. It takes between three and five hours to complete and is a strictly guided route. It has an official grading of three to four. Drivers will appreciate the beauty of the endemic fynbos of the region, as well as the unique sandstone formations, both of which transform the countryside into a one-of-a-kind artwork.
Those visiting the area to tackle the Klein Tafelberg 4x4 Trail are invited to experience the prettiness of the local countryside by heading out on a walk or hike too. The Klein Tafelberg hiking trail is challenging for its distance, taking between three and five hours to complete, but well worth the effort. Remember to bring along a camera and a pair of binoculars.
